В рамках всемирной акции протеста против продолжения функционирования лагеря заключенных «Гуантанамо» организация «Эмнести Исраэль» организовала сбор голосов под петицией, призывающей правительство США закрыть лагерь заключенных в Гуантанамо. Петиция будет передана послу США в Израиле.
10 января организация «Эмнести» организовала пикет у посольства США в Тель-Авиве.
Эти акции протеста приурочены к пятилетию со дня появления на базе в Гуантанамо на Кубе первых арестованных в рамках войны против террора. Правительство США содержит заключенных без суда, подвергает их пыткам, унижениям, они подвергаются бесчеловечному отношению.
Спустя четыре месяца после атаки террористов на башни Всемирного торгового центра в Нью-Йорке лагерь для заключенных в Гуантанамо принял первых арестованных. С 11 января 2002 года через лагерь прошли по меньшей мере 775 арестованных. Сегодня в Гуантанамо в заключении находятся около 430 заключенных, среди них по меньшей мере четверо несовершеннолетних. Из-за тяжелых условий содержания и издевательств зарегистрировано более 40 попыток самоубийства. Трое заключенных покончили с собой.
Во время пикета перед посольством США демонстранты продемонстрировали «заключенного», одетого в оранжевый комбинезон узника Гуантанамо, которого «охранял» «солдат» в форме морских пехотинцев США.
